In Bengali culture, the Shakha and Pola have a great significance. Before the Bengali marriage day in the wee hours of the same day, married women perform a ritual called Dodhi Mangal in which they soak bangles made with shells in turmeric water. Seven married women put shankha pola into Dulhan’s hands. This symbolizes as seven forms of Goddess.

Shakha and Pola are God blessing to the married woman. In a married life the bride needs to make sure that she fulfills her responsibility without losing her charm, sensitivity, and morals accompanied by auspicious thinking.

These should be worn by women on both their hands and on the traditional sense Paula must be worn between the lohabadhano which is an iron bangle. This is given by the husband (groom) and symbolizes the unity and strength of their marriage. The concept of shankha also means that there is no friction between the negative and positive energies since iron signifies the flow of positive energy.


For some stories, it might be that zamindars' wives used to wear them to match their red-and-white shankha polo bangles that all married Bengali women wear.
